Its difficult for the readers to portray them as the victims they is. Joe was hurt several times by the boy he raised up which is Pip, and his wife, Miss Havisham. Pip turned his back on Joe and became ashamed of who he was. Miss Havishams treatment to her brother, Pip caused him to treat Joe as if hes lowly.
